@Ya Lun I get where that frustration comes from—especially if you’re attached to how things unfold in the original novel of Battle Through the Heavens. But there’s also a more positive way to look at these later chapters that might make them feel a bit more intentional rather than just “poorly written.”

For one, adaptations often shift focus to appeal to a broader audience. The increased spotlight on Xun'er can be seen less as favoritism and more as an attempt to highlight her importance in the overarching plot—especially her background, power, and long-term role in Xiao Yan’s journey. In many cultivation stories, early emotional bonds are revisited later as characters grow stronger, and Xun’er represents that “origin connection” for Xiao Yan.

As for Cai Lin, it’s true her presence feels reduced compared to the novel, but her role still carries weight. The adaptation may be holding back certain emotional beats or developments for pacing reasons or future arcs. Donghua productions sometimes …

I think the majority of people would agree that the latter chapters of the story were written very poorly to a point where the animation couldn't carry the show anymore. Xun'er is one of the most insufferable characters in all of donghua due to her being a glorified spoiled child. Cai Lin who Xiao Yan has a kid with is sidelined by ruining her character model and cutting out all romance with her forcing Xun'er into the spotlight when she is actually the first wife in the novel. Not long after Xiao Yan's character model is also ruined by giving him a massive square head. The main characters seem childish and irresponsible do you really expect me to believe that a spoiled child beats all of the hard work Xiao Yan puts in his cultivation journey not to mention that after he has a child with Cai Lin he can't be responsible and marry the girl at that point I can't take it seriously.
